The Doppelgänger Conversations

Dr. Rochus Hinkel (UniSA, SIDA Foundation and TDRF Research Fellow) and Geraldine Kihirri Barlow, Head of International Art for the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) will discuss contemporary examples of Doppelgänger and the role of the original and the copy in contemporary art practice. What are contemporary examples of art works using the concept of Doppelgänger? Is the copy a modern invention in the art world or are there historical examples?

This second in a series of conversations with Dr. Hinkel develops the intellectual, historical and conceptual framework for the research project into the role and potential of decorative arts in the digital age. The conversations allow for reflections, provocations and discussion concerning topics related to the concept of the doppelgänger, challenges and limitations of digital fabrication, the potential of digital storytelling, and questions concerning digital archives and conservation.

About the speakers…

Dr. Rochus Hinkel is the recipient of the UniSA, SIDA Foundation and TDRF Curatorial Research Fellowship in Interior Design and Decoration for 2020-22. He is Associate Professor for Architecture and Design at the University of Melbourne and co-director of the Advanced Digital Design and Fabrication Research Hub ADD+F at the Melbourne School of Design.

Geraldine Kirrihi Barlow is Head of International Art for the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA), Brisbane and has an extensive experience in curating and managing major art exhibitions and events in Australia and overseas.

Speculations on the Original and the Copy

Tune in to hear a conversation between Dr. Rochus Hinkel (UniSA, SIDA Foundation and TDRF Research Fellow) and Esther Anatolitis, Melbourne. Dr Hinkel and Esther discuss philosophical concepts and social phenomena around the questions of ownership, authenticity, as well as concepts of identity, appropriation and difference. Can copies become more relevant than originals? Is a copy an original work? Who defines what is an original and what is a copy?

Dr. Rochus Hinkel is the recipient of the UniSA, SIDA Foundation and TDRF Curatorial Research Fellowship in Interior Design and Decoration for 2020-22. He is Associate Professor for Architecture and Design at the University of Melbourne.

Esther Anatolitis is an arts advocate, Deputy Chair of the Contemporary Arts Precincts, and Honorary Associate Professor at RMIT University, School of Art, Melbourne.

Video – New acquisition: Royal French Empire bed

A short video introduction to our latest acquisition – the Royal French Empire bed.

This early 19th century sleigh bed is said to have been a gift from Ferdinand VII of Spain to Princess Charlotte of Wales, the only child of the Prince Regent, and Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld on the occasion of their marriage in 1816. The bed was acquired for the Foundation by the late Martyn Cook, inaugural Director of The David Roche Foundation, and is now on display in the main bedroom.

In Melbourne Street, North Adelaide, sits one of the greatest European decorative arts collections in a private institution in Australia. It is set within the sumptuous interiors of David Roche Federation-style home and museum. The collection spans two centuries of art and design — from the early Rococo period in France to the delights of Fabergé in Russia. 

At first glance, you’re struck by the understated elegance of the late David Roche’s Federation home ‘Fermoy House’ and its adjoining museum complex. But there’s nothing understated about the collection inside! Minimalism was a dirty word to this avid collector, with every room showcasing his loves – including his lifelong passion as a dog breeder and experience as an international judge.

The David Roche collection is one of Adelaide’s hidden gems and a must-see attraction.

The video also includes views of our late 2019 exhibition of Russian art, Triumph and Tragedy: Catherine, the Romanovs & Fabergé, which included pieces from David’s collection as well as a number of private and public lenders.

Video – Martyn Cook talks about Fabergé

As part of our late 2019 exhibition Triumph & Tragedy: Catherine, the Romanovs & Fabergé at The David Roche Foundation, we had a special treat for visitors – a short video of our late inaugural Museum Director, Martyn Cook, talking about Fabergé, recorded in early 2019. Although the exhibition has finished, the video will remain up for viewing. In the video, Martyn discusses the Fabergé brand, David Roche’s Fabergé items, and meeting Tatiana Fabergé (a Fabergé expert  as well as a great-granddaughter of Carl Fabergé). We hope you enjoy.
